By State Rep. Jessie Danielson
As State Representative, one of my top priorities is passing legislation to help veterans. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that nearly 40,000 veterans live in Jefferson County. From funding for county-based services, to helping returning veterans transition into the workforce, to requiring state universities to award college credit for service skills – we have made good strides toward making it easier for veterans to get the degrees and certifications that put them on the path to economic security.
We have more work to do. That’s why in 2018 one of the first bills I have introduced is HB18-1060, which will create an income tax deduction for retired military under the age of 55 of up to $20,000 for their military retirement benefits.
This piece of bipartisan legislation – Income Tax Deduction for Military Retirement Benefits – is designed to keep skilled workers in Colorado. In exchange for bringing their talent and experience to help grow Colorado’s economy, we are both honoring the service of veterans and helping to keep more of their retirement benefits in their pocket.
Whether it is the veterans in my family or yours, I truly can’t think of another profession that we ask so much of. We are indebted to those who answered our country’s call. HB-1060 is one more way your state legislature can say ‘thank you.’
Passing the Income Tax Deduction for Military Retirement Benefits bill is going to make a difference for Jefferson County veterans and their families. It will reduce the tax burden on retired service members who have made Colorado their home.
