Danielson’s Wage Theft Transparency Act Becomes Law
(April 13) – In a victory for Colorado working families, Gov. John Hickenlooper today signed the Wage Theft Transparency Act, ending the use of an obsolete, century-old law to classify wage theft as a “trade secret.”
HB17-1021, sponsored by Speaker Pro Tem Jessie Danielson, D-Wheat Ridge, makes wage theft violations subject to open records requests. This will give potential job applicants, business competitors and the public the ability to learn whether a business has been found by the state to have cheated employees out of their pay.
“I fought to pass this bill because I believe an honest day’s work deserves an honest day’s pay,” said Rep. Danielson. “This law will empower honest, hard-working Coloradans and level the playing field for businesses that do right by their employees.”
The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Sen. John Cooke, R-Greeley. The new law went into effect with the governor’s signature.
